German authorities have apprehended two individuals following an arson attack on a construction site in Munich early Thursday. Police are investigating a possible political motive in connection with the incident, which occurred near a Munich defense firm attack target. This action underscores escalating security concerns across the nation.
Law enforcement officers responded to reports of incendiary devices thrown from a vehicle shortly after midnight. One device sparked a small fire, which police swiftly extinguished. Thankfully, it caused no significant damage. However, another incendiary device had to be defused by a specialized bomb disposal unit.
Officers arrested a 28-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, both Bulgarian citizens, at a nearby gas station shortly after the incident. Investigators are currently questioning them about their involvement. The targeted construction site is situated directly adjacent to office buildings housing several defense contractors, including firms specializing in communication systems for the German military.
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann connected this event to a broader disturbing trend. He stated that Germany faces an increased risk of politically motivated attacks on security and defense companies. This incident follows two suspected sabotage attempts on power infrastructure this week.
Furthermore, Mr. Herrmann explicitly mentioned an attempted drone attack at Leipzig airport in August, for which Germany formally blamed Russia. He warned that such incidents could happen anywhere in Germany. Economic Affairs Minister Hubert Aiwanger also voiced strong concerns. He called for enhanced protective measures for German companies and vital infrastructure, noting similar past targeting of defense-linked technology firms.
The Bavarian Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism has assumed control of the investigation. Authorities are specifically probing whether this was a targeted Munich defense firm attack. Officials emphasize the need for vigilance against these serious and increasing threats, collectively painting a picture of heightened internal and external security challenges for the country.
