Russian authorities have seized the operations of German Metro retailer Metro Cash and Carry, placing its assets under temporary administration. This significant action was announced through a decree published on Monday. It marks the latest in a series of business takeovers linked to countries supporting Ukraine.
President Vladimir Putin signed the official decree. It states that Metro Cash and Carry’s Russian operations are now under the “temporary management” of a company named UK Torg RUS. This decision impacts a major international business presence within Russia.
Moreover, this move mirrors recent government actions against other international firms. Earlier this month, Moscow seized the assets of Swiss food giant Nestle. French retailer Auchan and the former Leroy Merlin DIY chain also faced similar takeovers. These actions reflect a broader pattern.
The German Metro retailer reported substantial figures from its Russian presence. Its sales in Russia amounted to 2.6 billion euros during the 2024/2025 financial year. Furthermore, the company’s Russian group companies held 152 million euros in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30.
Many Western companies quickly divested or isolated their Russian holdings after the Kremlin ordered troops into Ukraine. Sanctions have made trading in most goods exceptionally difficult. However, some firms chose to remain, citing concerns for their employees or citizen well-being, often scaling back operations significantly.
Russia has since complicated the exit process for these companies. Firms now require presidential authorization for asset sales. In many instances, the government has chosen to seize assets outright. This latest decree continues that trend.
