Torrential rains have unleashed severe Catalonia flooding, resulting in two confirmed deaths and one person still unaccounted for. This extreme weather event has prompted widespread alarm across Spain’s northeastern region. Authorities have declared an “extreme danger” status for areas around Barcelona and Girona.

Residents in affected zones received urgent advice to remain indoors. Additionally, rivers in these areas face a high risk of bursting their banks. Emergency services are actively involved in rescue and recovery efforts.

One fatality occurred when a wall collapsed at a Tordera campsite, north of Barcelona. Meanwhile, another individual tragically drowned in a submerged garage in Montornes del Valles. Furthermore, search teams are diligently looking for a missing person in Pineda de Mar, located about 52 kilometers north of the regional capital.

Catalan regional leader Salvador Illa has appealed to the public. He urged residents to exercise “the greatest caution” and adhere strictly to emergency service instructions. This unprecedented rainfall has caused significant disruption.

Spain’s AEMET weather agency reported more than 100 millimeters (3.9 inches) of rain falling overnight in numerous locations. Civil protection agencies issued alerts for communities near the Besos River, warning of potential overflows. People were advised to move to higher floors if flooding started.

Across towns near Barcelona, homes became inundated, and vehicles were submerged. Local rail services faced considerable disruption. Emergency crews successfully rescued individuals trapped in cars on flooded streets in Granollers and other communities.

Moreover, Barcelona airport experienced flight cancellations and delays. Shops in the region closed earlier than usual, and various sporting and cultural events were called off. The widespread Catalonia flooding has paralyzed daily life for many.

This extreme weather is linked to a meteorological phenomenon known as a DANA, or “cold drop.” It occurs when cold air high in the atmosphere collides with warm, moisture-rich air rising from the Mediterranean. This interaction generates intense thunderstorms. Spain’s unique geography, with mountain ranges forcing moist air upwards, often intensifies these effects.

Previous DANA-related floods, specifically in October 2024, caused catastrophic damage and 238 deaths in eastern Spain, primarily in Valencia. A 2026 study indicated human-caused climate change intensified rainfall during that earlier disaster. However, a separate analysis would be necessary to determine climate change’s influence on the current Catalonia flooding.
